Alpacas – Answers to commonly asked questions.
Common
homeland is in South America, primarily found in
Bolivia, Chile and Peru. There are two types or breeds, Huacaya
and Suri. Huacaya fleece has a dense crimp
with wavy locks, which differs from the Suri’s which
hangs in uniform locks.
Our
Canadian winters are no problem for them. A good shelter
with bedding is sufficient, and of course their
fibre
keeps them toasty warm. Lifespan is usually
15-25 years with an average height of 36 inches at the
shoulders. Weight varies between 100 – 180
pounds, adult females average 150 lbs and males 150+.
Alpacas
chew their cud like a cow or deer and survive well on
low protein hay and grazing. As well they are
supplemented with grain and mineral mixes to meet
their proper nutritional requirements.
Baby

females Hembras.
Females
can be bred around 14-18 months or at about 95 pounds
depending on the alpaca. Gestation period is on average 335+ days , producing a single cria,
twins are very
rare. Birthing is remarkably quick and trouble free
and 14 days later the female is ready to be bred
again. Males begin breeding at two to three years of
age depending on the maturity of the male.
There
are 22 natural basic colors
such as fawns, grays, browns, black, and whites,. known
as one of the worlds finest and most luxurious natural
fibres.
The
answer is yes, Alpacas will spit, but not usually at
humans, unless angered or performing some
disagreeable procedure on them. They will spit at one
another to get their message across. One good example
is putting a pregnant female in with a male that wants
to breed and
"stand back a good distance". Now that's
spitting.
